At least 35,000 applicants could be affected, alerts the United States embassy

A significant information leak in the Federal Republic of Somalia's electronic visa system may have exposed private data belonging to tens of thousands of travelers, involving American nationals, the US embassy in Somalia has alerted.

The embassy reported gathered trustworthy accounts that "unknown cyber attackers" compromised the Federal Government of Somalia's e-visa platform, potentially compromising information belonging to roughly 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files distributed through digital channels comprise names, photographs, dates of birth, marital status, residential locations and email information, per a US embassy statement issued on last Thursday.

"This data breach is ongoing and might reveal any personal data provided to the system," United Kingdom officials has similarly alerted travellers.

"Assess the potential threats prior to requesting a digital visa necessary for travel to Somalia."

Administrative Action

Government officials have remained silent regarding the incident. But the government has moved visa application system away from the initial application portal to the updated platform, without issuing an official explanation.

"Although the US Embassy in Mogadishu cannot verify whether applicant details is part of the breach, individuals who have applied for a Somali e-visa might be compromised," the official communication said.

Geopolitical Impact

The updated visa process mandates all travellers, comprising individuals from the self-declared republic of the northern territory and the semi-autonomous region of the northeastern region, to apply for travel visas through digital means.

Opponents claim visitors have encountered extra fees in particular territories, amounting to duplicate payments.

Geopolitical Background

Somaliland, that announced sovereignty in the early nineties, governs itself with its own institutions although it lacks worldwide acceptance. Mogadishu authorities asserts that this territory continues to belong to its national domain.

The alleged breach contributes to long-running tensions concerning Somali federal authorities and Somaliland administration concerning jurisdiction of national air territory. Even though Mogadishu re-established full control of territorial skies in the past decade, northern authorities persistently challenges the arrangement.

Current Developments

The disagreement intensified in recent days after the northern region's leader Abdirahman Irro said the northern territory would refuse the federal e-visa system and directed that aviation companies need to acquire permission from northern authorities when approaching its airspace.

However leading carriers have refused to process individuals without Mogadishu's electronic permit.

On Saturday, the northern region's top diplomat Abdirahman Dahir Aadan reiterated that "every person entering Somaliland will obtain their visa on arrival", declaring Mogadishu's digital application process posed risks and alerting that "individual details might be obtained by extremist organizations" as a result of using it.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has caused certain visitors traveling to Somaliland stranded at airports following refusal of entry due to absence of the federal electronic visa.

The northern region's aviation official, the transport official, has informed journalistic entities that the instructions - originally publicized previously - became operational on the tenth of November.

Officials declared companies that ignore will be told to divert, and claimed numerous flights were previously redirected.

Airspace Control Conflict

Video evidence distributed by Somaliland's aviation ministry reportedly displays local air-traffic controllers providing guidance to foreign aircraft commanders - an action hailed internally as an assertion of Somaliland's autonomy.

However the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority maintains it retains exclusive regulatory authority over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes all territorial skies. It has ordered every plane to ignore any guidance issued by authorities other than federal authorities.

Officials cautioned that not adhering to Somali and international aviation rules could generate aviation dangers and lead to "significant legal repercussions".
