The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead covering more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
