England along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a group together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
