RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
